This is the story of my mother-in-law, Connie.
Connie had health problems and has been overweight most of her life. She became a grandma three years ago and was determined to lose weight so she could be more active. So last year she decided to get gastric bypass surgery. That was the beginning of so many problems.
So she didn't have a standard gastric bypass, it was called a gastric bypass roux en y (not completely sure if that is correct spelling or not). This means they rerouted her intestines. In doing so she would have to take vitamins for the rest of her life. when you have this particular surgery you are unable to absorb nutrients naturally so you have to take vitamins. This was the quickest way she thought of to getting in shape.
Now before you are approved for surgery you are supposed to stick to a certain diet for a minimum of a month and go through counseling. The doctor has to determine if she is mentally capable of handling the extreme lifestyle change. Well not only did she not do any of that, she didn't even qualify do to her other health issues. But she was approved to go under the knife.
Now the weeks following surgery she seemed to be handling pretty well. I did notice of things she was eating she shouldn't have been. Fried foods for one thing. She was convinced if she just chewed them for the taste but didn't swallow she was fine. For one that is gross lol but for another you are still swallowing grease. But the fact that she was loosing weight and seemed to be doing great we didn't say anything to her. We figured since it wasn't bothering her she would be fine.
I do need to mention that not only was she going in for the gastric bypass, she was also getting a hernia removed. During the surgery the doctor found that her gallbladder was inflamed and needed to be removed. For one they should have stopped the surgery and have another consultation with her and for another removing her gallbladder was not a smart move.
She was bad diabetic. Anyone who knows anything about it will know that diabetics have issues with fighting infections. This is why diabetics are told to, well basically stay aware and take good care of cuts to prevent infection. So when they removed her gallbladder that significantly increased her chance for possible infection. And that is extremely bad when you are having such a major surgery.
No one noticed anything wrong. We thought she was handling everything great. She seemed pretty happy although she was a little weak due to pain from the surgery everyone thought it was a success. Well we didn't notice what was going on on the inside.
This ends episode 1. I am not sure if I will turn this into a weekly series of daily series. The updates may be daily so just make sure to stay posted for updates on the series.
